STUDENT DRESS GUIDELINES

Philosophy

The CBS Administration realizes that the Bible does not specifically say how we should dress or how our hair should be cut or styled. It does, however, give us principles to follow. In light of these principles, we have set an institutional standard for Calumet Baptist School that we believe will honor the Lord and help our student body to have an appearance that will be modest, conservative, neat, and distinctively Christian.

Our intention is not to say that a Christian who fails to meet this standard is sinning, but only that Calumet Baptist School students should meet this standard to help the teachers and administration be consistent in their enforcement.

General Guidelines

We do not want to imply that this institutional standard is a measure of its spirituality because it is not. As the dress styles of our present culture keep changing, the administration of our school has to determine what dress appearance or style is acceptable and in line with the principles found in Word of God. The principles listed below were used to develop our school dress policy.

Principle of Modesty (I Timothy 2:9; II Timothy 2:22)

As Christians, we are admonished to dress in a manner that personifies the principle that we are the temple of God.

Our dress should show sensitivity to the spiritual well being of those who see us.

Our dress should also reflect a desire to glorify God in a manner that is not vane, boastful, or forward.

Principle of Distinction (Deuteronomy 22:5; I Corinthians 1:14-15)

God created the male and the female to be distinctively different one from another.

When Christians fail to dress in a manner that honors God’s obvious distinction between men and women, God views it as an "abomination."

Principle of Identification (I Timothy 4:12; Romans 12:1-2)

Christians should strive to identify with their Lord and Savior and not with the world.

God desires that His people demonstrate to the "world" that they are different.

Principle of Neatness and Age Appropriateness (Philippians 4:5)

We believe that there is an appropriate dress for different occasions and activities.

In our opinion, a neat and dressy appearance promotes a better learning atmosphere.

It is helpful to CBS when parents already apply these principles at home. By enrolling students in our school, the administration assumes that parents are in compliance with the dress guidelines and therefore will support the school’s efforts in maintaining these principles of modesty, identification, distinction, and neatness. The administration will work with parents regarding the interpretation and application of these guidelines.
