Calumet Baptist School was established in 1962 as Baptist Christian School,  an agency of the Calumet Fellowship of Regular Baptist Churches . Its board members were appointed by the council of nine of the CFRBC and was comprised of Pastors and laymen. In 1972 , with the move to a permanent facility, we became Calumet Baptist School and a self governing arm of the CFRBC with a self appointed board of the supporting CFRBC churches. Eventually, the by laws were reworked giving each supporting church one representative on the council and allowing involvement by non-CFRBC  Baptist churches who are independent and philosophically aligned with us.

CBS was started as an elementary school with grades K-6th at Calvary Baptist Church at the corner of Cottage Grove and Highway Ave. in Highland. In the fall of 1969 CBS was moved to Grace Baptist Church in Gary where it was housed until the fall of 1972. At this time we purchased a facility at 47th and Whitcomb in Gary and added the ninth and tenth grades to complement the Jr. High classes which were housed at Glen Park Baptist for two years prior to the move. 11th and 12th were each added in the following years with the first graduating class of 12 in 1975.

Since that first class, we have graduated over 770 students from CBS. Graduating class sizes have ranged from that first class of 12 to a high of 44 in 1979. School enrollment has also seen a wide range. During the late 70's we saw our record high of approximately 430 students. We have a large geographical student base. Our students have come from as far as LaPorte, Lowell, Harvey,IL and all points in between.

Due to the fluctuation in enrollment, we have had to become creative in housing. There were years in which the elementary was moved into Grace Baptist and other years it was moved into Calvary Baptist to help ease the crowding. Due to a deterioration of the facility at 47th and Whitcomb, in 1991 we found ourselves forced to find a new location for the Jr./Sr. High school. From the fall of 1991 until the spring of 1995 we were housed in a rented church in Hobart. In the fall of 1995 the Lord allowed us to purchase a facility on Orchard Ave. in Highland. During a need to downsize in 2004, we sold the Orchard Ave. facility and moved the jr/sr high school program to Griffith Baptist Church. This downsizing was done in conjunction with Calvary Baptist Church’s desire to start an elementary school.

The school has been led by eight individuals . Our first principal was Mrs. Gilbert. From her we have had Mr. Dick Abel, Mr. Bill Francis, Rev. Ron Phillips, Mr. Jim Wendorf, Dr. Richard Stashevsky,  Pastor Dave Myers, and our current principal is Mrs. Linda Baessler who has been with us since we added the high school program.

CBS has been associated with the ACSI and is currently a member of the AACS. We have been blessed with many of our students receiving awards in our state academic competition. We have also had five1st places in national academic competition. In the athletic arena, our girls volleyball and boys basketball teams have placed in many state and national competitions.
